Deception and danger lay in wait in the beautiful, harrowing California backcountry in this gripping suspense novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan.
Surgical and trauma nurse Harlow Frye loves the small town of Knightly, where breathtaking views of the Sierra and a tight circle of female friends provides a refuge from her professional life. But lately, it’s Harlow’s personal life that’s causing all the chaos.
First, a series of anonymous threatening letters are left in her mailbox. Then, Harlow is dealt a blow when her friend Lawyer dies after reacting to some sort of toxin. And to top it off, Harlow finds her secret obsession, CIA operative Hawkin Wilder, bleeding out on a mountain trail.
As Harlow turns her home into a makeshift hospital, her infuriating, attractive patient insists on distracting her. But even in the face of their increasing connection, there’s no way Harlow can ignore the escalating storm, when someone else close to her is struck down by the mysterious toxin.
With little more than intuition to go on, Harlow turns to the five friends who have proved themselves to be a better family than her own flesh and blood. As the women attempt to unravel the killings, they will need to rely on their instincts and their connection to each other–or else they’ll lose everything they’ve come to hold dear.
Review
I have read so many books by this author. This series is more of a Women’s fiction style book then the rest of her paranormal books. I have read the rest of the books in the series but it isn’t necessary. This book can stand alone.
Set in the Sierras, the story is set among a group of friends who have all had a lot of struggles in their lives. They have banded together to be a strong group of women who stand together. Each book in the series focuses on one of the friends. This book is focused on Harlow and Wilder.
Harlow grew up in a political household. Her father is the Senator and she is used to threats and doesn’t always take them seriously. She escaped her parents and lives in Nightly working as an ER nurse. She loves photography and bouldering. She doesn’t see herself as a wife or mother, just a good friend. She is definitely attracted to Wilder but doesn’t believe it would ever work out so she tries to ignore it.
During this book, there is a mystery surrounding the deaths of some locals and tourists. She tended to one of the locals that died in the hospital and saw first hand how terrible the death was. She doesn’t think it was some new illness but is convinced it was a bite. But why are so many people dying? And why couldn’t the doctors figure out what had happened. This mystery is tangled with someone trying to set-up some of the CIA operatives and Wilder is targeted. While trying to figure all of this out, Harlow discovers that she may indeed care enough about Wilder to commit to a relationship with him.
One of things I enjoy about this author is the rich world she describes. It’s easy to picture both the characters and the scenes in the book. I felt like I was right there with Harlow while she climbed, took pictures and fell for Wilder.
This is an enjoyable read that has you trying to figure out what’s going on right along with the characters. I was surprised at who was behind the deaths but not the source. I had guessed that source. It’s always fun to figure things out and still have some surprises.
If you enjoy this author but haven’t read this series yet, here’s your chance. I’m giving away my review copy of this book and another one in the same series, Murder At Sunrise Lake. Both books are hardbacks.
